Benevolent Robotics Competes in NVC15

BENEVOLENT ROBOTICS COMPETES IN NEW VENTURE CHALLENGE 15

BOULDER, CO (MARCH 29, 2022) - On March 29, 2022, Benevolent Robotics LLC competed in its second entrepreneurial pitch competition for the year, New Venture Challenge at University of Colorado Boulder.  New Venture Challenge connects members of the CU Boulder campus with the thriving Boulder start-up community.  Up for grabs is a total of more than $100,000 in funding.

Previously in the year Benevolent competed in the Monfort Entrepreneurial Challenge hosted by the University of Northern Colorado.  One difference from last year?  Both pitch competitions were held in person rather than remote.

Benevolent Robotics LLC was founded January 4, 2021, by Jon Burroughs, who will graduate from University of Colorado Boulder with his MBA (Masters in Business Administration) this spring.  “Participating in competitions like New Venture Challenge helps us get feedback on our business model, but even more important is talking with the people who we want to serve. This past year we presented at the Christopher and Dana Reeves Foundation Summit, we were a central participant at Liberate 2021, a workshop hosted by the National Science Foundation, and we did customer discovery workshops like NSF iCorps’ Research to Market.  Gaining a deep understanding of the challenges that our customers face is a key activity for our business.”

This year, Benevolent unveiled its robot for helping people who live with paralysis, aiming first to help people with quadriplegia, which is the partial or complete paralysis of all four limbs of the body.   The robot’s design builds on lessons that Burroughs learned developing robots for underwater, consumer, commercial, and space applications, in addition to work with people living with paralysis.

“We believe that our company can do very well by doing something very good,” says Burroughs.  “Any funds we win from NVC15 will be used to advance our early pilot studies this summer.”

Participants who will advance to the second round will be announced the evening of March 30, 2022.  Teams that make it to the championship round will pitch April 12 at the Boulder Theater.  To learn more about the New Venture Challenge and to register to attend the finals visit http://www.colorado.edu/nvc/
