Benevolent Robotics Presents at Reeve Summit

BENEVOLENT ROBOTICS PRESENTS AT CHRISTOPHER AND DANA REEVE FOUNDATION SUMMIT

BOULDER, CO (APRIL 27, 2021) - On April 29, 2021, Jon Burroughs and Jereme Gilbert of Benevolent Robotics LLC will present at Reeve Summit 2021.  The summit is being held virtually this year and will bring together health professionals, caregivers, advocates, and people living with paralysis to brainstorm a future for people with disabilities that is characterized by access, inclusion, and innovation.

In their session, the duo will present their findings and concepts from customer interviews and solicit input from session attendees on how they think robots may or may not be helpful, to understand the problems, tasks, and opportunities that need to be addressed for the benefit of people living with paralysis.

“At Benevolent, we’re reimagining the robotics market to improve availability, function and cost in order to improve the quality of life and independence of people living with paralysis. Sooner rather than later,” says Jereme Gilbert, a product designer who himself lives with paralysis.

Burroughs, a robotics engineer and MBA student at University of Colorado Boulder, and Gilbert, a mechanical engineer and founder of Queen City Adaptive Recreation in Charlotte, North Carolina, first met each other at a gym in Texas that Burroughs had founded.

“Jereme was one of my first athletes,” says Burroughs, who graduated from Carnegie Mellon where he helped build and test various planetary exploration robots at the Robotics Institute.  Burroughs also worked on remotely operated underwater vehicles, called ROVs for short.  “ROVs allow us to retrieve objects and see thousands of meters beneath the surface of the ocean.  That same tech can transform people’s lives in their own living rooms.”

To date the most popular uses for personal and home robots have been vacuums and toys.  There are technological challenges but Gilbert and Burroughs believe that there is a realistic opportunity for personal robots to improve lives of people living with paralysis and other disabilities, sooner rather than later.
